okanagan Outdoors Guide

Trails

  • It is a must. You can drive up and get closer to the top for an easier hike, but we love doing the Apex Trail. There is a small parking lot on Knox Mountain Drive right across from the tennis courts. The views are great all over the city.

  • Starting at the Lake Avenue Off Leash Dog Park near the bridge, through Kelowna City Park, pass the marina and finishing at Tugboat Beach. This walk will take you past the downtown core with lots of food options and sights to take in.

  • If you are afraid of heights I would skip this, for everyone else you must come. This old rail line has fantastic views and the 18 bridges (trestles) are so cool to walk or bike across. There is so much to see along this trail that we recommend bringing a bike or renting one.

  • The full Rail Trail will take you from Vernon to Kelowna, but our favorite section is along Kalamalka Lake just south of Vernon. Hiking it allows you to take all the views in, but with so much to cover and well maintained path biking it is also an option.

  • The whole Kettle valley Rail Trail provides 600 km of trails from Castlegar to Hope, but our favourite section that is easily accessible starts in downtown Penticton and heads north along the lake. It will take you through some amazing vineyard views, places to eat and drink. You can even stop at Three Mile Nude beach if you are up for it!

  • We love this trail as it isn’t well traveled, a small parking lot in Peachland takes you to big views of the lake. We do recommend hiking shoes and it is dog friendly.

  • For residents and visitors of West Kelowna, you don’t have to stray far from the vineyards for an amazing view. Mount Boucherie offers 3 routes to the top for varying skill levels. Some sections can be quite steep with a lot of switchbacks.

Activities

  • One of our favourite spots for cliff jumping, not too big, not too small. A 1 km hike each way will take you from the parking lot to some of the bluest waters BC has to offer. On weekends in the summer it can be quite busy but a ton of fun to hang out and watch people jump.

  • Yes we love to visit wineries, but if you don’t have a car or “can’t drive” we recommend bar hopping downtown Kelowna. You will still get the option to taste many great wines with lots of restaurant only offerings.

  • The biggest and best off leash dog park in our books, located right across the street from St Hubertus Winery. What more could you want then a dog park on the beach!

  • Different than Rattlesnake Point mentioned above, it’s not even on the same lake! This small island on the Okanagan is a perfect place to paddle and explore away from the crowds. There is a landing beach that is easy to miss but offers you the perfect chance to explore the unusual history of the island. Will you be able to find all of the abandoned mini putt holes?!

  • The produce from the Okanagan has to be the best in the country. Anytime between spring and fall something local in season. We love to just drive around taking in the sights and stopping at stands that catch our eye.

  • You can rent or bring your own floatie. This slow and shallow river spans 5km with a halfway point if you are in a rush. Starting at Coyote Cruises, just south of Okanagan Lake after the dam and taking you to Skaha lake.
